Norwest Construction Heating Up

February 14, 2023

Construction is heating up on Stage 1 at Norwest Quarter for our clients Mulpha, but in good news for residents and businesses, the rapidly growing Sydney suburb’s average overall temperature will be cooling down!

And it’s all thanks to ground-breaking research conducted by Mulpha in conjunction with the University of NSW Built Environment School to tackle urban heat within the Norwest precinct and mitigate its impact. Mulpha is targeting an overall reduction of two degrees in the local Urban Heat Island Effect – a process which occurs when vegetation is replaced by asphalt, concrete and buildings which absorb and then re-emit the sun’s heat, causing overall temperatures to rise.

To aid this reduction, Mulpha has adopted an urban heat response in its zero-carbon Norwest Quarter. The stage 1 buildings Banksia and Lacebark being constructed by Parkview employ light coloured materials throughout for high solar reflectivity, as well as awnings, screens and external shade structures to reduce heat, and extensive tree planting.

With excavation works on Stage 1 now approaching completion (pictured), detailed excavation works will soon commence, with the big transition to structural works following shortly thereafter and the first of the tower cranes to be installed next month.
